Comatic Dreams, psychological horror
Title: Comatic Dreams
Author: Les Lowe
Nightmares, daydreams and what passes for "reality" can be difficult to sort out and never more so when the three versions of reality are hatched during comatic dreams, dreams resulting from a coma. Comatic Dreams starts simple enough when two estranged brothers, one gay and one straight, meet with the hope they can salvage early brotherly ties after years of living apart. The division seems on the surface to have been caused when one brother learns the other is gay. But as the story slowly reveals through comatic dreams, the problems go deeper than life styles. Shortly after the brothers (Ben who is straight and Alex who is gay) try to reconcile the past that split them, the oldest brother Ben is left in a coma after being caught up in a vicious hate crime. It is during his "comatic dreams" that he is forced to face truths he has hidden from himself as he tries to find a way back to the living. The story is compelling as the reader sinks into the dark corners of Benīs mind and (maybe) the mind of the reader. Some readers may find themselves struggling with their own social and religious demons. This is a unique book crafted by a very imaginative first time author who is not afraid to tackle the complexities of the mind. On one level the story is a horror story displaying the inhumanity of man toward man. Other levels plunge into mythology and wizardry. All and all this is a highly recommended fun read for those looking for something original and it offers the promise of a second book the author is currently working on.
